Most mornings in WaterSound West Beach start the same way: coffee, a leash, and the boardwalk that carries you over the dunes toward the Gulf. It's the walk every brochure photograph promises, and it's real. But there's a second trail almost nobody in the neighborhood has tried, and it sits in plain sight, directly across Scenic Highway 30A from the entrance to Deer Lake State Park.
The park's main gate, the one with the parking lot, the restrooms, and the boardwalk to the beach, gets all the traffic. The other trail, called simply the Deer Lake Trail, starts at the treeline on the opposite side of the highway, hidden by dense sand pine scrub, with no crosswalk to alert drivers to the trail. You have to know it's there. Blue blazes on blue metal discs mark the path once you find it, and from there it winds through forested uplands and interpretive stops that most West Beach residents have never seen, because the drive to the beach entrance takes you right past it without stopping.
That's the piece of this neighborhood worth knowing: the most rewarding stretch of nature next door isn't behind a gate or a Club card. It's public, it's free past the park's entrance fee, and it's easy to miss entirely.
The Trail Across the Street
Trail guides differ slightly on the exact distance, some list the loop at 1.2 miles, others round it up to 1.5, but they agree on the character of the walk. It cuts through pine flatwoods rather than dunes, which makes it a different experience from the boardwalk crossing most residents already know. Deer Lake itself, the lake the park protects, belongs to a genuinely rare category of geography. Coastal dune lakes occur almost nowhere else in the country, and Deer Lake is one of the small number found only along the Gulf Coast.
For a resident, the practical takeaway is simple. If your West Beach routine has only ever included the boardwalk and the beach access on the park's main side, you've walked half of what's actually there. The other half, the quieter half, is a few hundred feet away and requires nothing more than crossing the highway at the right spot.
What the Gate Actually Includes
Inside West Beach, the amenities that come with your HOA dues are straightforward: the zero-entry community pool, Puttering Park's short putting course, and the boardwalks that connect the neighborhood to the beach. The Watersound Beach Club, with its full-service dining and concierge pool service, sits on a separate membership tier. That distinction matters less day to day than people assume, mostly because there's one stop in the neighborhood that closes the gap between members and non-members entirely, and it isn't inside any gate at all.
Bruno's Didn't Start Here
Bruno's Pizza sits just off County Highway 30A in Watersound, and most residents treat it as a neighborhood fixture without knowing its actual age. It opened as 30A's first pizzeria in 1990, run by a 23-year-old who had waited tables in Grayton Beach and had picked up some pizza-making experience back in college. When the original lease came up for renewal in 1991 and the landlord and owner couldn't agree on terms, that same cook borrowed $12,500 from a bank willing to overlook his thin credit history and bought the shop outright. It's been family-run ever since.
The shop didn't begin in its current spot, either. Bruno's originally operated out of Seagrove before relocating a few miles east to its expanded home in Watersound, where it sits today. That means the pizza place West Beach residents order from on a Tuesday night predates the Club, predates the Beach Club dining venues, and predates most of the homes in the neighborhood by two decades or more. It's neutral ground in a community built around membership tiers, because it was here first.

Thursday Nights Move to the Pavilion
Watersound's own event calendar confirms the summer series at the Pavilion runs through June, July, and August 2026, rotating monthly between a children's play, a live set from an artist connected to the 30A Songwriters Festival, a family night, and a Neighborhood Race organized with Fleet Feet. The season opened in May with Locals Last Stand, the community's informal marker that summer has started, and it continues at the Pavilion through the end of the season.
None of this requires a Club membership or a homeowner card. The Pavilion sits at Watersound Town Center, open to residents of every community along the corridor, not just the one closest to its doors. For a household in West Beach, it's one of the few weekly fixtures on the calendar that has nothing to do with which amenity tier you've bought into.
The Version of West Beach Nobody Photographs
The marketing version of this neighborhood is the private one: the Beach Club pool deck, the boardwalk at golden hour, the concierge service. That version is real, and it's worth what people pay for it. But the version residents actually live inside includes a state park trail hidden across the highway that most people drive past without noticing, a pizza shop that's been family-owned since before the Club existed, and a free concert series that doesn't check your HOA status at the door.
Knowing where those things sit, and how long they've been there, is the difference between renting the postcard and actually living in the place.
